The scintillation-spectrometric performances for two types of 7 in. diameter photomultipliers (20^<th> century VMP/11/170 and E.M.I. 9623) were investigated as a function of photocathode-first dynode voltage. The two types of tubes showed very different characteristics from each other that are due to differences in the electron-optical structures of photocathode-first dynode system. (1) VMP/11/170 tubes showed the minimal spread in the pulse height distribution at 325 V, though the gain was not maximal. (2) The optimal voltages for 9623 tubes were also determined. The mesh focusing electrode showed strange characteristics as a focusing electrode which may be explained as an additional dynode. (3) The statistical analysis of the results with VMP/11/170 tubes indicated that the relative variance of the number of secondary electrons emitted from dynodes was changing with the energy of primary electrons.
