It will be very important to take into account radioactivity which is induced in various materials when we plan to build high intensity proton accelerators. Focusing our attention on the problem of induced radioactivity in iron, we have made theoretical estimates of radiation doses, which seem to be useful for designing high intensity machines, for example, a 12 GeV 1∼30μA proton synchrotron. Since experimental data concerning spallation cross sections are scarcely known, it is necessary to extrapolate them. The Monte Carlo calculation was applied to cascade effects for several reasons. Although a high intensity accelerator such as the 12 GeV 1μA proton synchrotron, has not yet been built, some discussion might be possible in comparison with recent observations on induced radioactivity in iron at the CERN Proton-Synchrotron and Synchro-Cyclotron.
