The influence of the mean stress on the fatigue strength of mild steel under three conditions-in the air, in sea water and under cathodic protection-was investigated and it is found that the mean stress up to 10 kg/mm^2 has little effect on the fatigue strength. The change of bending moment during testing and the appearance of the surface of the fractured specimen are also examined.
