Longitudinal intercostal girders are usually considered in active as longitudinal members when under tension, but it is quite sure that they are somewhat effective, though the degree of effectiveness in very ambiguous. Moreover, it is well known that, at the ends of that girder, a concentration of shearing stress occurs, and that, by means of tapering the ends, the concentration is avoided. In this paper, the effectiveness as a longitudinal member is treated and the formula for that is given, by means of which it is made clear that about the half of the sectional area of the intercostal side girder in the double bottom of transverse system is effective as a longitudinal member under tension, and can be taken in the calculation of the moment of inertia of the section. The concentrations of shearing stress at the tapered ends are also treated, and the approximate formulae for the stress distribution in that case are given.
