The problem of the allowabe minimum amount of stability for the sea-going vessels is one of the most important in naval architecture, which still require further investigations. Recently, J.Rahola in Finland made extensive researches upon this problem, and gave the criterion for judging the stablity. In the present paper, the anthor extends the Rahola's criterion, adding further restrictions on the rauge of stability, angle of inclination for maximum stability lever, and metaceutric height, and by using the approximate equation of the stabiity curve formerly obtained by him, finds the relations between the ship's principal dimensions to suit for these requirements. When the displacement and the speed of a ship are given, a very simple method is developed to determine graphically the allowable ranges of these dimensions, especially the amount of her draft, effective freeboard and metacentric height or the height of the centre of gravity. Moreover, the presented method can be applied to give the allowable range of the height of centre of gravity of a ship in service fox any draft, not to endanger her transverse stability, which may be of use to the captain responsible for her, if the curve of this range be handed to him from the builder.
