Three types of optimum designs related to ship structure are discussed using one of nonlinear programming techniques, SUMT. (1) For flat grillage model of such stiffened structures as bottom shell, the relation between loaded area, beam number and optimum section arrangement are examined. (2) Under the condition of ship classification rule, the trends of optimum longitudinal frame space, frame area and plate thickness of large-sized oil tanker are examined. (3) Some suboptimization techniques applicable to partitioned substructures of a large-sized framed structure are examined. The procedures proposed herein are to combine the major optimum and suboptimum under the satisfaction of force balance and displacement compatibility.
