An Analyzing Method of Manoeuvrability with the Phase Plane

In this paper, a new method to determine the stability indices by making use of some kinds of phase planes is introduced. When we want to determine the values of T_1T_2/K and (T_1+ T_2)/K by the Bech's method, it is much necessary to assess the differential coefficient ψ^^… calculated by the equationψ^^…(dψ^^‥/dψ^^・) with enough accuracy. However, it is very difficult to do so because the yaw rate signal measured on the board contains many noises. On the contrary, this new method makes good use of the areas of limit cycles drawn on the phase planes instead of a certain set of the time derivatives (ψ^^・,ψ^^‥,ψ^^…). The usefulness of this method is verified by some simulation studies with an analogue simulator. Furthermore, this method is applied to analysis of the modified zigzag manoeuvres of an actual ship, and is proved to be very useful.
