This paper presents a numerical method of predicting the deformation and aerodynamic performance of a 3-dimensional flexible sail. The proposed computation method consists of an incremental Finite Element Method and a modified Vortex Lattice Method, which are separately used to determine the elastic deformation and aerodynamic performance of a sail respectively. Numerical computations are performed in the case of yacht sail, which is a typical example of aero-elastic problem. The usefulness of this approach is confirmed by comparing numerical results obtained by the present method with existing numerical solutions of an elastic membrane and experimental results of a yacht sail as well. As an example of application of the proposed method, a series of numerical computation is carried out to clarify the effects of wire stress and sail material on the aerodynamic performance of sails.
