A simple asymmetric capsize equation is examined numerically and analytically. The bifurcation diagram which shows the period bifurcation including the chaos and capsizing, the fractal erosion of the safe basin in the initial value plane and the fractal capsize boundary in the control parameter space are illustrated. It is confirmed that a new mode of capsizing accompanied with the period bifurcation can exist, which has been observed in the model tests, and that an appearance of the bifurcation in the roll response implies an imminent danger of capsizing. It is also shown that although the period bifurcation appears in both symmetric and asymmetric equations, the distinct bifurcation appears only in the asymmetric one, and that in the symmetric equation, the symmetry of solution is broken before the period bifurcation. Bifurcation analysis to approximate the capsize boundary in the control space and the Melnikov analysis to estimate the beginning of the fractal erosion of the safe basin are also done.
