Development of the Semi-Submerged Catamaran (SSC) at the Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. is presented. Theoretical and experimental researches conducted to develop each technology element in early stage are briefly mentioned. The 12 meter long experimental SSC MARINE ACE was constructed in 1977. The original twin strut per side configuration was later converted to the single strut per side in 1978 for performance comparison. Successful operation of this experimental craft led Mitsui to develop the prototype SSC ferry "MESA 80" carrying 446 passengers, building of which was completed in August, 1979 at Mitsui's Chiba Yard. Development of the SSC Marine Ace and the MESA 80, and their sea trial results are discussed. The future potential application of the SSC is also mentioned.
