• The purpose of this study is to investigate the inflammatory responses to protein components in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF). GCF is an indicator of the health status of the abutment teeth and their periodontal tissue which greatly influence the design of prosthetic appliances and their prognosis. In this study, investigation was carried out into the responses of the inflammation to protein components in GCF by producing experimental gingivitis in healthy human subjects. Human subjects with healthy gingiva were compared with those suffering from gingivitis, and periodontitis, and protein components were identified in both cases. The results were the following : 1. Plaque Index, Gingival Index, and Pocket Depth increased with time. The GCF value showed a similar increase for the first three weeks. 2. Analysis of the change of protein contents was carried out by agarose gel isoelectric focusing. It showed that each of the bands became clearer and more well defined with time. 3. The increase of protein bands was generally observed. In the case of gingivitis the increase was recognised in the protein group around pI 6 but in some cases of periodontitis no increase was recognaized. 4. 19 proteins were identified by means of agarose get isoelectric focusing.
