The MAST(Mega-Ampere Spherical Tokamak)device is the purpose-built successor to the START device which pioneered ST research. It is specifically designed to evaluate energy confinement, beta limits, and MHD features(especially disruption 'resilience' and halo current fractions)in a large, collisionless ST plasma. First plasmas of one-third MA were achieved(without use of the central solenoid)in December 1999, and double-null divertor plasmas with current 0.5 MA were achieved in March 2000.
