This writer teaches English composition at a junior college and has a question on what should be taught in the course of the English composition. English compo, sition in Japan often means the translation of short Japanese sentences into English. On the high school level, it can be very true and high school students are expected to learn a variety of short English expressions because their knowledge on these expressions is quite often asked in entrance examination for colleges and universities. When they are asked to translate so,me short Japanese sentences into English, they have to try to do that by using these short English expressions without having any knowledge on the syntax. They did not have a chance to study the syntax to develop short paragraphs into sho,rt articles at the high schools. Majority of new college students, however, expect to learn the translation of Japanese into English further by using short English expressions. This writer diagnoses there is a shortcoming with this method of studying English composition on the college level and she insists the importance of teaching creative writing of English. This writer follows a certain method to teach creative writing of English at her college. This method rs called "Three Stage Method of Teachmg English Composition". This paper is intended to make a brief survey on the shortco, ming of tradiitonal method of teachmg English compositron and proposes her "Three Stage Method of Teaching English Composition".
