1. The present study was designed to clear the distribution and ecology of the community of Paliurus ramosissimus, a rare shrub growing around the salt marsh. 2. Paliurus ramosissimus is distributed in southern continental China, Taiwan, Cheju Island of South Korea and southwestern Japan. The fruit of this species has the corky or woody mesocarp and is disseminated by sea water. 3. The Paliurus ramosissimus community is found in Japan in western and eastern Kyushu, southern Shikoku and the eastern part of Kii Peninsula. Its habitats are situated above the high-water level on the shore of sea-leric lakes and estuarys. 4. The community is chiefly composed by Paliurus ramosissimus in the shrub layer whose height is 2.5 to 4m. The floor of the scrub largely varies in the coverage and species composition. 5. Based on the species composition, the community was subdivided into three groups. The first is the typical group, which is developed on the wet stand. The coverage of the herb layer is poor. The second is the group of Amsonia elliptica, which has the dense floor. The last is the group of Rosa wichuraiana, representing a mantle community which is rich in species composition.
