The Katata Formation is the uppermost formation of the Kobiwako Group viz. the bottom deposits of Lake Paleo-Biwa. The formation is very interesting to us, because it corresponds closely to the actual bottom deposits of present Lake Biwa. a) Fossil diatoms of the Nijigaoka Clay Member (approx. 900,000 years ago). From this Member were enumerated 11 genera and 25 forms (taxa), among which Pinnularia lignitica CLEVE is the most remarkable. b) Fossil diatoms of the Sakawa Clay Member (approx. 400,000 years ago). From this Member were found 20 genera and 56 forms (taxa), among them the noteworthy taxa are Melosira undulata (EHR.) KUTZ., Melosira sp. (M. islandica-group), Stephanodiscus niagarae EHR., Opephora Martyi HERIB. var. robusta SKV., Opephora Okadae SKV., Fragilaria leptostauron (EHR.) HUST., Achnanthes oblique (GREG.) HUST., Navicula hasta PANT., Navicula menisculus SCHM., Pinnularia nipponica SKV., Cymbella hybrida GRUN., Cymbella nipponica SKV., Gomphonema Berggrenii CL., etc.
