• At the beginning, this paper briefly introduces the basic concept and evolution of information system development approaches (ISDA), which we can divide into six categories : life-cycle approach (LCA), structured approach (SA), prototyping approach(PA), object-oriented approach (OOA), soft system methodology (SSM) and socio-technical approach (STA). After we offer a comparative review of them, a plenty of knowledge relevant to ISDA in China is explained. More attention, however, is paid to the analysis of main problems currently existing in the application of those six ISDA. On the basis of the analysis of an information system in China which was successfully developed by our group, the prospect of ISDA research and application in China is predicted optimistically.
