This article attempts to help develop effective public communication, by analyzing the relationship between the ad design and the classic arts at the hand of a number of such masterpieces used in Japanese commercial messages. A collection of ad samples to be discussed here is classified in seven categories as follows : 1) ads that use the image of Mona Lisa of Leonardo da Vinci; 2) ads that use the image of other western masterpieces in painting; 3) ads that use the image of Japanese paintings such as Ukiyoe; 4) ads that uses the image of The Thinker of Auguste Rodin; 5) ads that use the image of other western masterpieces of sculpture; 6) ads that use the image of Japanese sculpture masterworks; and 7) ads that reflect the art scene at a time and place.
