The presentation will focus on the two methodological issues in genre analytical approach in cross-cultural pragmatics: (1) methods of data collection --fromrecording of authentic data to discourse completion test (DCT) and multiple-choice questionnaire, and (2) ways of data analysis -- how to code the data and how to interpret the findings. The particular genre orientation of this research concerns teacher-student interactions in one-to-one academic tutorials. Such anemphasis on'genre' gives a clearer delineation of the role and status of interlocutors on the one hand, and of the socio-cultural assumptions presupposed in the interactional settings, on the other. Main data is a video-taped recording of authentic tutorial interactions between Japanese students studying in Britainand their tutors in the visual arts.As a basis for comparison with this crosits-cultural data, tutorials in the respective native language in several different disciplines were also recorded. ln addition we have. data from retrospective interviews, focus group discussions, and discourse completion tests in both languages. Methods of analysis will cover (1) observation of recurring examples, (2)coding of DCT answers, (3) statistical analysis and interpretation, and (4) cognitive models for explanation.It is suggested that the combination of inductive and deductive methodologies should give stronger explanations about the findings.
