Second-language researchers and educators recognize that numerous social, cultural and historical factors combine to form the character of foreign-language instruction in a particular setting. In any particular foreign language learningsetting, however, the behaviors, perceptions and experiences of individual learners are shaped, not only by those societal factors, but also by a large numberof cognitive, affective and personality variables.
