Comparative cytogenetic studies were done in Indian major carps Labeo rohita (Ham.), Catla catla (Ham.) and Cirrhinus mrigala (Ham.) by conventional karyotyping and nucleolar organizer regions (NOR) banding. The diploid chromosome number in these species was found to be 2n=50. Interspecies variation in karyomorphology was observed in L. rohita, C. catla and C. mrigala with chromosome formula 10m+14sm+8st+18t (FN=74), 10m+16sm+8st+16t (FN=76) and 12m+18sm+6st+14t (FN=80) respectively. Ag-NOR staining also revealed interspecies variation in band pattern. In L. rohita and C. catla NORs were localized on two pairs and in C. mrigala NORs Were localized only on one pair of chromosome. Comparison of chromosome profiles of present study with earlier reports indicated presence of intraspecific variation in species of IMCs.
