Supernumerary chromosomes in two species of the family Pimelodidae(Teleostei, Siluriformes)

Cytogenetic studies were carried out on two pimelodid catfish species belonging to the family Pimelodidae. Iheringichthys labrosus showed 2n=56 (22m+18sm+10st+6a) with small acrocentric supernumerary or B chromosome in varying of the number of 0 to 1. Rhamdia cf hilarii showed 2n=58 (30m+18sm+10st) and had one to three small metacentric B chromosomes. Theses results provided further information of the widely distribution of B chromosomes in the family Pimelodidae. Two species possessed Ag-NORs in only one pair. The C-banding patterns of the two species differed greatly in location and amount of constitutive heterochromatin. Moreover, the B chromosome of I. labrosus was not positive to C-banding, while all B chromosomes of Rhamdia were totally heterochromatic.
