Karyotypes of five pimelodid fish species analyzed were as follow : Pimelodella avanhandavae (2n=46 ; 20m+20sm+6st), Heptapterus longicauda (2n=52 ; 22m+26sm+4st), Microglanis cottoides (2n=54 ; 22m+20sm +12st), Pimelodus maculatus (2n=56 ; 20m+20sm+ 10st+6a), and Cetopsorhamdia iheringi (2n=58 ; 28m+24sm+6st). Ag-NORs appeared in two pairs in Heptapterus longicauda, and only one pair in four other species. C-banding patterns were different in each species. Among them Pimelodus maculatus and Cetopsorhamdia iheringi revealed a large amount of C-heterochromatin, indicating species specific heteromorphism in the C-banding pattern. The present cytogenetic results confirm a high chromosomal variability in the family Pimelodidae and suggest that such chromosomal variability plays a role in the evolution of this fish group.
