ON THE EFFECTS OF PLANT EXTRACTS ON THE α-AMYLASE ACTIVITY IN RICE ENDOSPERM

• Effects of ethanol extracts obtained from several plant materials on α-amylase activity in rice endosperm were examined. Promoting effect on the α-amylase activity was estimated in terms of gibberellin A_3 equivalence using the embryoless endosperm. Inhibiting effect was examined using intact seed. On chromatography of the extract from Prunus, the zones showing promotion of the α-amylase activity also exhibited the activity for the elongation of the leaf sheath of rice seedling. But this was not the case with the extracts from Pharbitis, Allium and Lupinus.
