The following information as to the role of the main light period in photoperiodism was obtained from the experiments of photoperiodic tuberization with Begonia evansiana Andr.: 1. Tuberization was most rapidly induced by exposure to red light during the main light period, but It also occurred after exposure to blue or green light. The far-red light was ineffective at all. Such a red light action was Increased by combination at certain ratio with the blue or far-red light. 2. Induction of tuberization by red light was markedly promoted at low temperature, while that by blue light was somewhat inhibited. 3. The effect of the main light period was not reduced even when the leaf was kept in an atmosphere free from CO_2, under nearly anaerobic conditions. CO_2 gas was required only under aerobic condition.
