A callus from Jerusalem artichoke tuber required coconut milk for Its growth. Auxin was also essential and gibberellin was stimulative for the growth, but the effect of kinetin was negligible. A callus from petiole, and three calluses from stem as well as a crown gall of the same plant were isolated, and a comparison was made on their response to the hormones. It was shown that these calluses behaved similarly toward auxin, gibberellin, kinetin, and coconut milk, except that crown gall did not require auxin. In all the experiments, any interactions among these hormonal substances were statistically insignificant. The data support the view that a callus has essentially the same properties, from whichever part of the plant it may be isolated.
