The photoacoustic gas uptake signal correlates with carbonic anhydrase activity in transgenic tobacco plants, various levels of which were induced by antisense RNA [Price et al.(1994) Planta 193: 339]. This is taken as evidence that the uptake signal is caused by CO_2-solubilisation upon light-driven stroma alkalisation rather than by O_2-uptake.
