The presence of nitrate in the seed and its utilization during anaerobic germination of rice (Oryza sativa L.) were studied. The results indicate that nitrate was reduced and assimilated by the coleoptile for 11 days during anaerobic growth after germination. The importance of the anoxic utiilization of nitrate is discussed.
