Alteration of gene expression during cold stress was examined by study of the in vitro translation products of poly(A)^+-RNA extracted from rice leaves. Upon in vitro translation of poly(A)^+- RNA of cold tolerant rice seedlings (variety, Somewake), several new polypeptides were found to be induced or repressed by cold stress. In particular, a 14 kDa polypeptide was strongly induced at 5℃ but not at 15℃ or 42℃.
