The wild-type acrA^+ gene of Escherichia coli K-12, cloned into plasmid pAF1, was expressed as resistance to acriflavine (AF) in AF-sensitive acrA mutant cells (N43). When acrA^+ genes were amplified by treatment of cultures with chloramphenicol (50 μg/ml), cells expressed much higher resistance to AF than that of the wild-type strain (N90).
