Starch synthesis and accumulation is strictly associated with the tuberization process in potatoes. To study the role of the levels of ortho-phosphate in controlling starch biosynthesis in tuber tissues, the effect of exogenous mannose on this metabolic process was studied. Mannose (10 mM) had almost no effect on the capacity of tuber slices to uptake ^<14>C-sucrose. Significant stimulation of starch synthesis, however, was evident in the presence of mannose. These results support the role of ortho-phosphate in modifying starch synthesis via the allosteric regulation of ADP glucose pyrophosphorylase.
