The stimulatory effect of CO_2, upon the HILL reaction by isolated chloroplasts was observed with erythrocyte carbonic anhydrase as a supplementary agent for CO_2 deprivation. Addition of this enzyme to the reaction media remarkably shortened the time required to obtain the maximal effect of CO_2. The degree of stimulation was rather small (below 50 per cent) and varied depending on the preparation of chloroplasts. In general, the effect was greater with broken chloroplasts than with whole chloroplasts. The lowering of light intensity diminished the CO_2-effect.
