1. In the process of aerial tuber formation in Begonia Evansiana ANDR, under short-days three stages are distinguished according to the sprouting ability of buds; namely, nycto-sprouting stage in which tubers can sprout without light, photo-sprouting stage in which light is required for sprouting, and thermo-sprouting stage in which chilling is required for sprouting. 2. There is no critical daylength for the photo-sprouting of isolated tubers, although, when attached to their mother plants, they sprout only under long-day conditions. This difference is ascribed to the failure of producing short-day stimulus in the tubers themselves. 3. For photo-sprouting higher temperatures are required than for the sprouting of chilled tubers at the thermo-sprouting stage. 4. Tubers at the photo-sprouting stage proceed further to the thermo-sprouting stage when kept in the dark, the process being affected by temperature. 5. The light function in photo-sprouting and the changes in sprouting ability of tubers in relation to the short-day stimulus are discussed. 6. An attempt is made to classify the plants according to their mode of requiring short-days for the cessation of their vegetative growth.
