Tuberization of Begonia Evansiana Andr. in response to short-day (SD) treatment given to a leaf is inhibited by long-day (LD) treatment of another leaf, no matter whethe the latter is situated above or below the former. In general, however, young leaves are more inhibitory than mature leaves, although the reverse is the case if the growing activity of the former is extremely lowered. LD treatment is inhibitory even when given prior to an SD treatment. In contrast with the above, the SD effect is slight in the younger leaves. The LD inhibition may be attributable primarily to a formation in the LD leaf of some substance antagonizing the SD effect.
