The effect of the zwitterionic detergent CHAPS (3-[(3-cholamidopropyl)-dimethylammonio]-1-propanesulfonate) on phycobilisomes was studied under high ionic conditions. Uncoupling of energy transfer occurred between phycocyanin and allophycocyanin in Nostoc. sp and between phycoerythrin and phycocyanin in Porphyridium cruentum. Difference in the action of CHAPS may be related to the phycobilisome structure.
