The effect of light irradiation on cytoplasmic streaming in Vallisneria mesophyll cells was investigated. Red light (λ_<max>=650nm, 1.9W/m^2) was most effective to induce streaming. Although induced streaming was markedly inhibited specifically by continuous irradiation with far-red light (λ_<max>=730nm, 1.2W/m^2), this inhibitory effect did not appear in the presence of La^<3+>. Intracellular calcium was examined by electron microscopic cytochemistry. In the mobile cytoplasm under red light irradiation, little precipitate was formed in the reaction with antimony. On the other hand, much more precipitate was observed in the cytoplasm rendered immobile by far-red light irradiation. From these results, we conclude that red light induces streaming by decreasing Ca^<2+> concentration in the cytoplasm and far-red light inhibits streaming by increasing Ca^<2+> concentration in the cytoplasm.
