Gibberellin A_3 (GA_3) was found to reduce the starch content in chloroplasts isolated from light-grown cucumber (cv. Aonagajibai) hypocotyls. Chloroplasts incubated with 50 mM sucrose showed an increase in starch content. The GA_3-induced reduction occurred both in the presence and absence of exogenous sucrose. GA_3 had no effect on the level of starch already formed from exogenous sucrose.
