The natural ^<13>C abundance (δ^<13>C value) of the field-grown leguminous plants (soy-bean, kidney bean, pea, azuki bean, mung bean, peanut and cowpea) was investigated by mass spectrometry with a precision better than ±0.2‰ for δ^<13>C. Among organs of premature plants, the leaves had the most negative values, and the nodules generally had the least negative values, and other organs, fruits, stems and roots, showed intermediate values. In the soybeans so far investigated, the grains of nodulating plants exhibited higher δ^<13>C values than nonnodulating lines. The δ^<13>C values of the grains varied depending on the species : peanuts showed the most negative values. Possible causes underlying these variations are discussed.
