Changes in activity levels of important enzymes of carbohydrate metabolism (α-and β-amylases, sucrose synthetase, acid invertase, acid phosphatase, glucose phosphate isomerase, aldolase, phosphofructokinase and pyruvate kinase) during seed development were determined. Changes in the activities of these enzymes and their functional significance in developing seeds are described. A close correlation was found between the stage of maximum carbohydrate oxidation and the accumulation of reserve materials in the developing seeds.
