Amaryllis vittata pollen grown in suspension cultures utilize exogenous carbohydrates for starch synthesis and pollen tube growth; tube growth is influenced by both mono-saccharides and oligosaccharides in the culture medium but not by ribose and xylose. The level of starch in germinating pollen was influenced by the availability of exogenous carbohydrates. Specific activities of some enzymes of glycolysis and pentose phosphate pathways varied during pollen germination. The activities of all the enzymes, except glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, showed more or less pronounced increase initially, followed by a general decrease in later stages. The increase in the enzyme activities was affected by the presence of cycloheximide in the incubation medium.
