Total lipids, total fatty acids and most polar lipids of tobacco leaves increased and decreased almost concomitantly with changes in chlorophyll during leaf development and senescence. In individual polar lipids, marked changes were observed in compounds associated with chloroplast membranes, i.e., monogalactosyldiglyceride (MGDG), digala-ctosyldiglyceride and sulfoquinovosyldiglyceride. Phosphatidylglycerol (PG) was the first, to decrease during leaf dvelopment. Green leaves contained a considerable amount of hexadecatrienoic acid (16:3) in MGDG, which suggests that tobacco belongs to 16:3-plants. The proportion of linolenic acid in four chloroplast lipids was lower in senescent leaves than in green leaves. Similar phenomena were also observed in 16:3 of MGDG and in hexadecenoic acid of PG.
