The day neutral cultivar of rice IR-8, which flowers 90-95 days after sowing, shows a decrease in the content and ^<32>P-incorporation of RNA with time; this is accompanied by increased RNase activity. RNA synthesis in both nuclei and mitochondria were affected markedly, but the decline in DNA template availability for RNA transcription was evident only after 49 days. Competitive DNA-RNA hybridization experiments revealed qualitative differences in the RNA molecules synthesized as the plants advanced to reproductive maturity. Agarose gel electrophoresis showed a new RNA fraction on the 46th day which later disappeared. Amino acid incorporation into nuclear basic proteins increased gradually with age. The overall trends in RNA metabolism appear to be similar in the photoperiod-sensitive and day-neutral cultivars of rice; in the latter changes are brought about as a function of time, and in the former these changes arc accelerated by inductive photoperiods.
