In Rupsail rice, which needs 28 short days for 100% flowering, the RNA content and ^<32>P incorporation into RNA decreased as the induction period lengthened; this decrease was associated with the enhancement of RNase activity. Of the subcellular organelles, only nuclei were affected markedly. Agarose gel electrophoresis showed two new RNA bands in the late stage of induction. Qualitative differences also were indi-cated by the results of DNA-RNA hybridization experiments. DNA template avail-ability for RNA transcription was reduced gradually as induction, accompanied by an increase in the amino acid incorporation into nuclear basic proteins, increased.
