Some properties of the circadian rhythm in potassium uptake of flow medium culture of the long-day duckweed Lemna gibba G3 were examined. 1) In total darkness, the rhythm faded out in ca. 48 hr; it restarted on transfer to continuous light. Under low-intensity light (below 700 lux), the rhythm was damped rapidly. 2) The rhythm appeared regardless of the potassium concentration in the culture medium (from 10 μ_M to 2 m_M) . The amplitude, but not the period, of the rhythm was influenced by the ambient potassium concentration. 3) Alteration in the light intensity or medium composition caused a change in the growth rate without modifying the period of the rhythm. These results indicate that potassium uptake rhythm in this duckweed is typical light-on rhythm, which has no direct relation with the rate of vegetative growth and requires light energy for its duration.
