The average distance betweeen bacteriochlorophyll molecules on the chromatophore membrane of Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides was estimated by two methods : measurement of the ratio of the number of chromatophores to the number of polystyrene-latex particles mixed in a chromatophore suspension and measurement of the packed volume of chromatophores in the suspension. The average distance was obtained under the assumption that bacteriochlorophyll molecules are positioned at hexagonal lattice points. The value was 34 Å when the bacteriochlorophyll molecules were assumed to be on one side of the membranes and 48 Å when they were assumed to be on both sides.
