The effect of white light on basidiocarp maturation in Coprinus macrorhizus was examined. The results obtained showed that basidiocarp maturation was separable into five successive phases in regard to photosensitivity: phase 1 in which light triggered maturation; phase 2 in which light delayed maturation; phase 3 in which light stopped maturation; phase 4 in which light accelerated maturation; and phase 5 in which light had no effect upon the progress of maturation. The relation between the light effect and the events during spore formation including nuclear fusion, meiosis and sterigma formation was examined with the following results: the light of phase 1 initiated nuclear fusion; the light given in phase 2 delayed the initiation of nuclear fusion and the later progress up to prophase 1; without the darkness of phase 3, meiosis never proceeded beyond prophase 1; and the light given in phase 4 accelerated the progress from the initiation of nuclear fusion to prophase 1.
