Mycelia of Neurospora crassa wild type (FGSC no. 853), harvested during the exponential phase of growth on defined minimal media incorporated glycine-2-^<14>C, serine-3-^<14>C and formate-^<14>C into proteins, DNA and RNA. Supplementing the growth medium with 1 mM glycine increased the flow of glycine and formate carbon into these products. In contrast, this supplement decreased the incorporation of serine-^<14>C. when such cultures were preincubated for 30 min with adenine, formaldehyde, formate or L-methionine, labelling of the nucleic acids and protein fractions by glycine-2-^<14>C was altered. It is concluded that glycine increases the turnover of C_1 units in Neurospora, resulting in greater contributions of the C-2 in nucleic acid and protein synthesis.
