When the phytochrome molecule of maize coleoptiles absorbs sufficient energy it binds to its putative binding site in a particulate fraction irrespective of whether or not it is in the P_<fr> form. The extent of binding depends on the light dosage. Red light is more efficient than far red light but both are effective in causing phytochrome to bind. Using phytochrome binding to subcellular particles as the prototype of a primary physiological response it is concluded that P_lt:fr> may not necessarily be the only physiologically active form of phytochrome.
