The potassium and chloride effluxes from cells of Chara during an action potential were recorded simultaneously using a flame photometer and a perfusion system. Both potassium and chloride effluxes increased instantaneously with the action potential. The net potassium and chloride effluxes during an action potential averaged 1777 and 1812 picomoles/cm^2・impulse, respectively.
