Light-induced chloroplast rearrangements were studied for leaves of 17 species of terrestrial plants (8 species of monocotyledonae and 9 of dicotyledonae) by measuring their absorbance changes with a dual-wavelength positional scanner. Almost all of these leaves examined underwent two types of absorbance change; absorbance increase on illumination with weak blue light and absorbance decrease with strong light. The maximal increase and decrease and the light intensities for these maximal responses as well as the intensity for mutual compensation of these opposite responses were determined and compared for these species.
