Sucrose gradient profiles of polyribosomes from epicotyl tissues of mimosa seedlings (Albizzia julibrissin Durazzini) were followed throughout induction of cold hardiness. An unusual fraction appeared in the polyribosome region of sucrose gradients with advancing stages of cold hardiness. Treatment of this unusual fraction and polyribosome fractions with RNase, Triton X-100 and deoxycholate suggests that the unusual fraction consisted of chloroplast or mitochondrial membrane fragments. Free polyribosome patterns were retained throughout induction of cold hardiness. However, the presence of polyribosomes during advancing stages of cold hardiness does not necessarily insure active protein synthesis.
